Abstract

This work consists on an analysis of the arguments used by Randall Holcombe to justify the inevitability of the existence of a monopoly on the services of defence and security. We understand that his justification is incomplete because the definition that he uses, regarding the need of a monopoly in the provision of services of this type, does not fit with the Austrian definition of public goods or monopoly. Besides, it does not take into account historical evidence of the provision of these services in competition.

Keywords: State, defence, security, monopoly, public goods.
